I have always felt a deep affinity to animals and to dogs in particular. I have been the proud owner of several over the years. Two of these animals have touched my heart in such a unique way, that their memory will always be with me.

Zeus, my German Shepherd, who was in my life from a baby at six weeks old, to an older dog at age eleven, had a big ego. Whenever I looked at him, I was constantly reminded of a beautiful woman who knows she is beautiful, and who is prepared to flaunt her beauty to the world. He understood his ability to command attention, and he revelled in it. In fact, he loved being the centre of attention. He was an extremely intelligent animal, and could read one's mind with little difficulty.

Underlying these positive traits, however, I found a child at heart, one who was vulnerable, and definitely needy. In his que! st for undivided attention, he could be manipulative, and yes, he had great skills in sulking. Zeus disliked being left alone for any great periods of time, and made his annoyance felt if this happened.

He also knew when he had crossed the line of accepted behaviour, and was a great believer in self punishment. On any occasion when he considered that he had been less than good, he would go into the bathroom, lie there with his head between his front paws and, with sorrowful eyes proclaim that he was truly repentant. Who then would have the heart to punish someone who so readily confessed his sins? It always ended up that he received a pat on the head, and given the all clear to be a family member again.

My other fond memory is of Jules, a Labrador/Scots Terrier mix, who was also an integral part of my life from her birth to aged 13. Unlike Zeus, Jules was a gentle soul. She was happiest when she could curl up by my side, and have me rub her tummy. Her love ! was always unswerving and unconditional.

It gave me a! sense o f peace when I looked into her soft brown velvet eyes, with their kindness showing through, and I felt on some levels a soul connection, a feeling that we were meant to be together at this particular period in time. Jules was also an intelligent animal, and was quite capable of expressing her displeasure with Zeus when the occasion arose. Their interaction with each other, and the unwritten rules they implemented, was a lesson in diplomacy that was interesting to watch.

Zeus and Jules lived like your typical brother and sister, squabbling at times, ignoring each other as they deemed fit, but joining forces when it was considered necessary. Once, in a fierce thunderstorm, I was amazed that while they both came to me for comfort and protection, they sat side by side, bodies touching, as if to say, "I've got your back".

When being taken for a drive, Zeus demanded that he have the window he preferred, and Jules deferred. When playing ball, Zeus, the active one, ! would hesitate if the fallen ball came too close to Jules while she was resting, and would look to me to retrieve it for him. Although their feeding bowls sat side by side, Jules always allowed Zeus to approach his bowl first.

From these two animals, I was taught many lessons, those of love, acceptance, reliance, self-assertion, gentleness, peace of mind. And I was reminded that life gives us opportunities to learn in many ways. We just need to be open to the moment and accept the lesson given.
